Tunisia To Host Boys’ U19 African Nations Volleyball Championship

2016 Boys’ U19 African Nations Championship

African Volleyball Confederation “CAVB” as nominated Tunisia to a host the 2016 Boys’ U19 African Nations Volleyball Championship, from September 8 to 16, 2016.

This is the second time in a row for Tunisia to host this event after they hosted the last edition in Kelibia in January 2015.

The competition is expected to attract the major forces in the continent led by record holders Tunisia who have 7 titles under their name an Egypt who won the trophy in 4 other occasions. Egypt are the defending champions as they won the last edition in Kelibia January 2016.

CAVB set August 23, 2016 as a deadline for the National Federations to confirm their participation.

The top 2 teams in this event will represent Africa in the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship.

Gambia NOC President Meets with Beach Volleyball Teams

Gambia Men and Women beach volleyball teams paid a courtesy call to the President of Gambia National Olympic Committee at the Olympics house in Bakau. The Gambian beach volleyball teams recently returned from Abuja and Tunisia where they participated in the Confederation of African Volleyball Continental cup finals for the Olympic qualifiers.

The Women beach volleyball team were in Abuja for the finals where they finished 8th thus been ranked 8th in the continent. The men’s were also in Tunisia for the same competition but failed to qualify for the Rio Games, however they too were ranked 8th in Africa. Speaking at the meeting the Acting President of Gambia Volleyball Federation Bai Dodou Jallow returns gratitude to the Gambia National Olympic Committee for the support giving to GVBF during the period of the qualifiers.

“Gambia participated in 5 international beach volleyball events in 13 months and we have registered success at all the events, notably winning gold and silver twice along the way. We also took part in the 11th All Africa Games in Congo in 2015 and there too our performance was productive,” Jallow stated.

We are thankful to the GNOC, under the leadership of Momodou Dibba, the committee had greatly supported us in all the events we participated and I am urging them to continue spreading their wings to other sports he said.

The Technical Director of Gambia Volleyball Federation Pa Dodou Sarr thanked the technical department of the federation for the assistance they gave to the teams. “I am so proud to associate myself to this young and enthusiastic volleyball coaches and most importantly I am indebted to the players for their discipline and committee Sarr stated”.

The President of the Gambia National Olympic Committee Momodou Dibba reaffirmed his commitment and assured the volleyball federation of his continuous support. ‘’I think you people did tremendously well, being ranked 8th in Africa is a great achievement Dibba commended.

The GNOC Boss urged the GVBF to continue on their track records and he promised to support the National beach Volleyball Championship later this year. The event was close with a presentation of a picture of the Beach volleyball team to the NOC Boss.

African Dream Project Enters Next Level in Cape Verde

The African Dream Project went to another level in Cape Verde as the Atlantic Ocean islands passed to the second year of the programme

Cape Verde received a second donation of sports material from the Italian Volleyball Federation (Fipav), for both indoor and Beach volleyball, which will be very useful to the Cape Verdean volleyball development in the coming years.

The cooperation agreement between Cape Verde and Fipav was achieved, through the intermediary of a Cape Verdean association named Kriol-Ita, whose representative Maria Silva, was impressed upon her visit to Cape Verde, where she had the opportunity to watch the men and women playoffs for the national championship, she promptly outlined the strategic plan of cooperation between the Cape Verdean and Italian volleyball.

“In Cape Verde, the materials for the implementation of volleyball are extremely expensive and some even impossible to find in the local market,” said Cape Verdean Volleyball Federation President Carlos Rodriguez.

“The material will support our ambitious development programme to spread the sport throughout the country.”

The programme helped the country to get a lot of achievements in the last few years specially in Volleyball, where Cape Verde as already participated for the first time in All African Games in Congo-Brazzaville last summer in Men as Zone 2 champions and as vice champions in women. The local champions Atletico de S. Vincente, made their second appearance at the Africa Clubs championships. All this participations is reflected in an improvement of the quality and the movement of several athletes from Cape Verdean teams to European teams.

The school sports initiative linked to the four centers of the African Dream Dr. Ary Graça Project, has had a very important job in the creation of a new ideology and a more strategic vision linked to training as an important pillar of a very bright future for Cape Verdean volleyball.

Already in its second year of operation, the four development centers Dr Ary Graca, as seen the arrival of these materials as a considerable improvement in the quality of equipment for the children.

Lesotho Concludes Volleyball Coaching Course In Aid Of “African Dream Project”

A successful Level 1 coaches course was completed in Lesotho last weekend in an aim to prepare the country for implementation of the “African Dream Project”, with the outcome of this course.

The programme attracted 26 teachers of physical education who were drawn from primary schools, high schools and from clubs.

“The course helps our centers prepare for the “African Dream Project” and train the youngsters,” Lesotho Volleyball Federation President William Nhlapo said.

“These teachers are expected to start working as soon as they get back to the schools and by June 2016. they will have to assemble all the children of different age groups for special training. The knowledge they have acquired during this course will help the kids at the grassroots level to lay a good foundation for our future players.” He added.

The course was instructed by Mr Fayzal Bundhun from Mauritius as he conducted well planned and prepared sessions for all participants.

Level I Volleyball Coaches Course Concludes In Senegal

Senegal concluded a five day coaching Level I course in Saint-Louis, Senegal May 1 to 5, 2016.

The course attracted 27 participants who came from the different cities and provinces of Senegal and Togo.

It was directed by Dev Shelein Ramdoo from Finland and instructed by Mbaye Deme from Senegal.

The opening and closing ceremonies of the course were attended by the local sports authorities representing the Minister of Sports, the university authorities and the National Olympic Committee in Senegal.

The organization of the course was perfect as a whole and candidates were motivated enthusiastic and had a great intellectual, technical and physical work. The participants were happy to receive their certificates at the end of the course with a great confidence from the instructors.

Volleyball Your Way Programme Takes On African Flavour In April

The FIVB’s development programme featured seven Volleyball Your Way (VBYW) courses and 10 coaches courses and technical seminars in April.

The month included six VBYW courses in African countries and one in Armenia. FIVB instructors also travelled to 10 different countries to lead coaches courses and technical seminars, including Senegal in Africa, Bahrain, India, Sri Lanka, Turkmenistan and the United Arab Emirates in Asia, Barbados and St. Lucia in the Caribbean, Mexico in North America and Argentina in South America.

The Volleyball Your Way course programme focuses on teaching the basics of volleyball to children and youth. The key target groups are teachers and grassroots coaches. The FIVB’s coaches courses and technical seminars, however, are aimed at more advanced participants, including coaches wishing to develop their knowledge of training techniques.

Moim To Lead Kenya In World Volleyball Grand Prix Group 2

Mercy Moim will lead newly-promoted Kenya in FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Group 2 after scoring 127 points for coach David Lungaho’s team in last year’s edition of the three-tier competition.

The Group 2 competition aims to provide the winning team a chance to climb the ranks through performance excellence and gain promotion to top-level Group 1, which includes a bevy of multi-titled squads.

The preliminary round will be played out in two weeks from June 3 to 12, with Tucuman, Argentina and Zielona Gora, Poland hosting matches on the first week; and Olomouc, Czech Republic and Wloclawek, Poland hosting matches on the second week.

The World Grand Prix cast for Group 2 is led by world No. 7 Dominican Republic and will be challenged by several top 20 squads like Argentina, Puerto Rico, Canada, Kenya and Bulgaria; and by a seasoned squad like Poland and an emerging European team the Czech Republic.

Among the top stars in Group 2 are the Dominican Republic’s Prisilla Rivera Brens and Gina Altagracia Mambru Casilla, will intensify the action, while their superstar libero Brenda Castillo will be key in defence. Fellow NORCECA competitors Puerto Rico will bank on Karina Ocasio’s scoring flair, while Canada will rely on Tabitha Love and Lucille Charuk.

South American side Argentina and African squad Kenya further boosted their mileage after last year’s World Grand Prix, as they also saw action at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup. Argentina will be bannered by a talented bunch of veterans including Paula Yamila Nizetich, Emilce Sosa and Yael Castiglione, while the remarkable Mercy Moim will lead Kenya.

European sides the Czech Republic and Poland will utilise their top scorers to fortify their respective bids this year. The Czech Republic’s Michaela Mlejnkova and Helena Havelkova and Poland’s Anna Grejman and Tamara Kaliszuk are expected to step up.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria will put their best players Eva Yaneva, Yuliya Stoyanova and Mira Todoroa in the forefront of their offence as they host the Group 3 Final Four in Plovdiv Bulgaria on June 18 to 19.

Madagascar To Host Girls U18 African Nations Volleyball Championship

Madagascar will once appear again in the organisation chart after the African Volleyball Confederation entrusted the Indian Ocean Island with the hosting right to the 2016 Girls U18 African Nations Volleyball Championship which acts at the same time as a qualifier for the FIVB World Championship for this age category.

Madagascar will host the competition from August 19 to 26, 2016, three years after the successfully organising the 2013 Women’s African Club Volleyball Championship with 16 teams in attendance.

The African Volleyball governing body determined the 3rd August as a deadline for the National Federations to confirm their participation. The championship is open to players born on 1st January 2000 or after.

This African Championship will serve as qualifiers for the 2017 FIVB Girls’ Youth African Nations Volleyball Championship as Africa has been granted 2 vacancies in this competition.

Egypt are the defending champions of this competition which they won in Algeria 2014.

Kenya To Tighten Fight On Drugs, Forms Anti Doping Commission

Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) has established Anti Doping Commission aimed at strengthening its fight against Doping in the local sport among players.

This is part of the elaborate plan put in place by the reigning local sports Federation of the year to help kick out the scourge that has threatened the local sports most notably Athletics which has received massive negative publicity with reports that up to 40 local runners testing positive for banned substances.

The last Anti Doping commission which also has two active players, Kenya Prisons ND national team libero Elizabeth Wanyama and beach Volleyball star Edinah Rotich of Kenya Commercial Bank will be chaired by KVF second vice President Kipkemei Sirma. Other are the Federation’s fixtures secretary Ishmael Chege, Emily Modena and Stephen Bore.

The principle mandate of the Anti Doping commission will be to create Anti-doping awareness amongst the players and officials of Volleyball.

The Federation’s Annual General Meeting held Saturday at Nyayo National stadium in Nairobi also established Mass Media, Public Relations, Marketing and Promotion Commissions.

The Media and Marketing body will be headed by coopted NEC member and former Criminal Investigative officer Isaac Tirop, the Federation Marketing officer Aggrey Chebeda and Sports Journalist Elvince Joshua.

Other existing commissions include the referees, coaches and Youth Development Commissions.

Meanwhile Ben Juma was confirmed as the replacement to Evans Wasike as the KVF Secretary General.

Wasike had resigned from the position about two months ago and Juma who was the deputy Secretary General got the unanimous support from the delegates and will serve the remainder of the term ahead of the 2018 national elections. However, Juma’s position will remain vacant in line with the Federation’s constitution which doesn’t allow for election to fill the vacancy arising from resignation unless they are more than one.

The meeting also resolved to expand the sports development programs by working closely with Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) and Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association to use selected Primary and High Schools as talent centres.

Tunisia Beat Morocco To Book Rio Volleyball Tickets

2016 CAVB Men’s Continental Cup- Finals

Tunisia Men’s Beach Volleyball team claimed the gold medal of the CAVB Men’s Continental Cup after they overcame North African neighbours Morocco 2-1 in the final of the competition held in Kelibia, Tunisia on Sunday.

Tunisia pulled off the qualification ticket for Rio 2016 representing Africa for the first time in the Olympic Beach volleyball competition.

Tunisian team 1 started aggressively supported by full packed court to beat Morocco 2 team 2-0 (21-15, 21-17). Morocco team 1 rebounded to overcame Tunisia 2 team 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) and extend the face off to golden match. The decisive match was won by the Tunisians 2-1 ( 26-24, 21-23, 18-16) to capture the gold medal.

In the bronze medal match Angola topped Sierra Leone twice 2-0 ( 21-18, 21-16) in the first match and 2-0 ( 21-17, 21-19) in the second match to finish in the third position.

Now Morocco and Angola qualified to the World Cup to have another opportunity to qualify to the Olympics when they fight with the second and third ranked teams form the whole confederations (10 teams) where another 2 teams will capture the Olympic tickets.
