Nigeria’s Sports Minister Lauds Peak Milk for Renovated National Stadium Gym

The Honourable Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung, has commended Peak Milk, Nigeria’s No.1 milk brand from the stables of FrieslandCampina WAMCO for renovating the paralympians’ power-lifting gym in Lagos.

The Minister gave this commendation during the handover ceremony of the renovated gym held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos Friday, January 19, 2018.

“The newly renovated gym, which is now of world-class standard would further inspire athletes, especially our Para-Powerlifting Team to continue to push the limits of excellence by winning more laurels for Nigeria” Dalung said.

The Minister called on other corporate bodies to emulate FrieslandCampina WAMCO and the Peak brand by partnering with government at all levels to support sports development in the country.

In his remarks, the Managing Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Mr. Ben Langat said that the brand took up the challenge to renovate the stadium, to use the story of the paralympians to inspire and motivate other Nigerians across all walks of life.

“We were inspired by the achievement of the paralympians whose willpower, drive and self-motivation to win against all odds have seen them shine despite the obsolete and non-functional gym equipment and facilities they had to use in the past. They have shown us all that regardless of whatever challenges we face, with determination, we can always reach for our Peak” Langat said.

Langat then charged the Para-Powerlifting Team which is currently ranked No. 1 in the world to make good use of the newly installed world class gym equipment and continuously make the country proud through several record breaking achievements.

Also speaking at the event, Head Coach of Nigeria’s Para-Powerlifting Team, Feyisetan Are, commended Peak Milk for coming to the aid of the athletes by transforming the National Stadium gym into a world-class facility and for also supporting the team with monthly supply of milk products. “This would definitely go a long way to enhance our training process and spur us to more success” Are said.

The ceremony was capped off with the rendition of the Peak unstoppable theme song written and performed by the acclaimed music maestro Cobhams Asuquo.

He emerged victorious after the organizers judged him the winner, surpassing other contestants from Africa and the rest of the world in his weight class.

Speaking after the championship, Kareem said: “I’ve been training for over 4 months for this championship and it wasn’t easy. It was very difficult but I’m happy I won my category. At the AAU Powerlifting and Weightlifting Championship in Las Vegas, USA, held at Harrah’s Laughlin hotel and Casino, a yearly competition that admits elite powerlifting athletes across the world. Nigeria’s Kareem “Body” Waheed emerged the overall best in his category after competing with athletes from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

The much-anticipated competition kicked off with a warm up session by all the participants followed by the gradual knock out stage which Nigerian-based Kareem Waheed aka “Body” emerged as the winner of the gold medal.

The competition took place from thr 7th to 9th April had over 50 participants competing and over 2000 individuals cheering them on daily.
