KATSINA, LAGOS SET FOR 2017 NATIONAL BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Board of Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) has fixed Wednesday 8th – Saturday 11th 2017, for the first Katsina Golden star National Badminton Championship in Katsina State and four days later the train will move to centre of Excellence Lagos state, where the first Mutual Benefit Assurance, National Badminton Championship will hold on Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th November 2017, with a prize of over two million Naira (N2,670,000) at stake in each of the tournaments and cash prizes available for singles in the Men and Women Categories, First, Second, Third to Sixteenth position while doubles and mixed doubles have prizes to the eight position. For the first time in the history of the game in Nigeria, entries of players for the tournaments will be done online through the BFN website http://www.badmintonnigeria.org

Meanwhile, President Badminton Federation of Nigeria Francis Orbih says action must match words from the new board stating that it is important to hold the National Championships in 2017.

“it’s is a double slam and a unique way to take off and start the end of year activities.

Katsina Golden Star Badminton club is blazing the trail and Mutual Benefit Assurance is following closely behind. it is a sign of better days ahead for Badminton in Nigeria”.

Speaking further Orbih expressed delight that the two national championships are coming after the Lagos international badminton classics in July.

“This is the first National outing of the new Badminton Federation Board, we have not had National Tournaments for some years and this is what players and stakeholders have been yearning for. We will be able to effectively rank our players, after these tournaments”.

As a morale booster for female badminton players in the country Orbih says the Federation decided to give equal cash prizes to both male and female players as a way of promoting gender equality.

“We will not encourage discrimination against gender in badminton. this is why the prize money is the same for the male and female category”.

The FCT Badminton Association has started the quest to make the 2nd edition of the National U-15 and U-19 Badminton Championship a big success, the Championship is set to hold at the Mabilla Barrack in Abuja, starting from November 21 to 25.

The annual championship is now the priority project for the board of FCT Badminton Association and machinery has been put in place to ensure that the season 2, of the championship meets up with the required standard.

Chairman of the FCT Badminton Association, Mr. Gabriel Gbayan stated that committees for the 2016 Badminton championship are already on a fast track and funding remains the greatest challenge for the board ahead of the championship.

Mr. Gbayan acknowledge the contributions made by some corporate sponsors and sports loving individuals during the 1st edition of the championship, stressing that without them, last year’s edition would not have been a reality.

The 1st edition of the National U-15 and U-19 Badminton Championship, held at the Mabilla Barrack in Abuja last year was a huge success following the cash and gifts incentives introduced by the organisers to encourage more participation in the game.

Chairman of the FCT badminton Association, Mr, Gabriel Gbayan opined that the competition would serve as a channel for the discovery of talent, while also calling on corporate bodies and individuals to help make the 2nd edition a greater championship.

Former Federal Capital Territory Director of sports, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi has thrown his weight behind the leadership of the Federal Capital territory Badminton Association.

The former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, who spoke while receiving members of the FCT Badminton Association on a courtesy visit in his office, stated that the agenda of the Association is the best master plan for grassroots development in the game of badminton.

According to him “sports loving Nigerians should embrace the sport to the fullest.

“I am happy because the FCT Badminton Association is seeking the involvement of the corporate bodies in their competitions and that’s the best way to go.

Lulu is very positive that the FCT Badminton Association will soon start to reap the gains of such investment if adequate attention is paid to the development of the game at the grassroots.

The respected sports administrator and the Omachi Atah of Igala, who is also the Proprietor of FOSLA Sports Academy, said he will continue to give his best to sports development in the country whenever he is being called upon.

Tokyo 2020 Approval: Ekeoma Calls for Corporate Support for Para-Badminton

President of Nigeria Para-Badminton Federation, Samuel Ekeoma has appealed to corporate bodies and individuals with passion for persons with disabilities to partner with the federation in featuring at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic games.

The appeal is coming after the approval by the International Paralympic Committee on inclusion of Badminton games for the disabled in the next Paralympic Games in 2020 Games in Japan.

Ekeoma said the partnership would ensure such organisations and individuals are made as Brands in promoting their companies in the 2016 to 2020 National and international games. 


He said the Para-badminton federation of Nigeria and Paralympic Committee of Nigeria being the Apex body in Control of disabled sports in the country is poised to ensure winning more medals in 2020 Games with Parabadminton (disabled Badminton).

“I am using this medium to appeal to our well meaning corporate and individual entities in Nigeria with passion for persons with disabilities to kindly come partner with Parabadminton in Nigeria as we ensure a branding and promotion of their companies in our 2016-2020 National and international games”.Ekeoma added

He also expressed optimism that with the necessary support the federation would win laurels for the country both at National and international levels.

The President disclosed that the first ever National para badminton championship took place in Umuahia, Abia state in 2014 with seven States participating while the 2nd National para Badminton championship was held in the same state with 12 states from the 6 geo political zones took part in the event.
