Egypt’s El Geish Crowned African Volleyball Champions To Represent Africa At Club World Championship

2016 Men’s African Club Championship- Final

Egypt’s El Geish have won the 2016 Men’s African Club Volleyball Championship after they overcame Tunisia’s Esperance 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21) in a thrilling final at Cairo Stadium Complex in Egypt on Friday.

El Geish will now represent Africa in the upcoming FIVB Men’s Club Championship later this year.

This is the first African title for the Egyptian club after their sixth participation in which they had earlier won silver medals in Niger 2007 and Bronze medals at Egypt 2011.

After the match CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani presented the top 3 teams with medals and the trophy for El Geish in presence of General Magdi El Lozy, the president of the Military Sports Organization and Foad Abdel Salam, the Egyptian Volleyball Federation President.

Meanwhile Esperance who played their 9th final and the 4th in a row lost the last 2 finals and the third in the last 4 years.

The other Egyptian team Smouha claimed the bronze medals after they beat Swehly of Libya 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 15-9) in another exciting encounter.

Egypt’s Ahly outclassed Espoir (RD Congo) 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) to claim the 5th position. Zamalek (EGY) overwhelmed FAP (CMR) 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-22) to finish in the 7th position.

2016 Men’s African Club Volleyball Champs: Esperance, Smouha, Geish & Swehly Through To Semifinal

2016 Men’s African Club Championship- Quarterfinal

In a day of thrilling and exciting actions Esperance (Tunisia), Smouha, Geish (Both from Egypt) and Swehly (Libya) booked their tickets to the Semifinal of the 2016 Men’s African Club Championship after they won their corresponding quarterfinal matches at Cairo Stadium Complex in Egypt on Tuesday.

What added to the drama of the day was the elimination of 2 African and Egyptian giants Ahly and the Zamalek from the quarters.

Esperance took on 11 time champions Ahly 3-0 (29-27, 25-16, 25-17) in an easier game than expected in front of full house of excited spectators.

Swehly (Libya) overwhelmed FAP (Cameroon) 3-1 (25-21, 25-21, 18-25, 25-18) to make it to the semis for the third time in the history of the competition.

El Geish (EGY) went easily to straight sets victory over Espoir (COD) (25-13, 25-13, 25-12) to feature in their third qualification for the semis in their short history.

In a purely Egyptian face off Smouha (EGY) survived in the tiebreak to defeat their compatriots Zamalek 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12) and show in their second consecutive semifinal qualification.

Now Esperance meet Smouha in the semifinal of the competition, while Geish play Swehly in the other semifinal on Thursday.

In the quarterfinal 9 to 16 places, Gendermerie of Madagascar upset Fanar of Algeria 3-2 (20-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-14, 15-13) in 2 hours of an exciting show.

Libya’s Ahly Beni Ghazi overwhelmed Daim Hamad of Sudan 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 25-23) in easy face off. Cameroon Sport fought aggressively to beat TGOM (GAB) 3-1 (25-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-20). Setif (ALG) hammered Atletico (Cape Verde) 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-18).

In the quarterfinal 17-24, Sudan’s Nahda regained their rhythm on time to overcome DGSP (CGO) 3-2 (29-27, 25-22, 16-25, 10-25, 15-12).

Meanwhile Nemostars (Uganda) continued their superior performance to win Police (SEN) 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-15). GSU (KEN) to get the first victory against struggling Woliatta (ETH) 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17).

Quarterfinal line up complete at Men’s African club Volleyball Championship

Egypt Al Geish, Tunisia’s Esperance, Cameroon’s FAP and RD Congo’s Espoir completed the quarterfinal line up at the end of preliminary round of the 2016 Men’s African Club Championship at Cairo Stadium Complex in Egypt on Monday.

Ahly, Smouha and Zamalek from Egypt along with Swehly from Libya previously confirmed their ticket to the quarters early on day 4.

Now Zamalek play Smouha in a purely Egyptian encounter in the quarterfinal, while Ahly meet Esperance in a repeat of their final encounter in 2014 and 2015. Swehly line up against FAP and Geish battle it out against Espoir in the other face offs on Tuesday.

Swehly maintained their clean sheet as they claimed the 5th victory in a row against DGSP (CGO) 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-9) to improve to improve their win- loss ratio to 5-0 with 14 points and the losers dropped to 1-4 in the 4th place.

Zamalek (EGY) secured the 2nd position after their victory against Police (SEN) 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15)

Gendarmerie (MAD) hammered Daim Hamad (SUD) 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-10) to finish third with 3-3, leaving the Sudanese team in the 4th position.

Ahly (EGY) claimed the fifth win against Atletico (CPV) 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-11) without dropping a set throughout their 5 matches to lead the Pool. Atletico finished 6th with the number of wins after they finished equal to Douanes in the number of points.

Espoir (COD) confirmed the second quarterfinal ticket of the pool after they beat TGOM (GAB) 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-19) to improve to 4-1. Wolaitta (ETH) recorded the first win against Douanes (BUR) 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13) but still at the bottom of the pool. TGOM came third, Atletico 4th and Douanes fifth.

Geish (EGY) fought aggressively for 110 minutes to overcome Setif (ALG) 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22) snf lead the pool with 5-0 record. Esperance (TUN) claimed the second ticket after they trounced CSVB (CMR) 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22) to improve to 4-1.

Smouha (EGY) maintained the victory rhythm as they upset Nahda (SUD) 3-0 (25-12, 25-22, 25-15) leaving them winless. Smouha improved to 5-0 and Nahda suffered 0-5.

Against all expectations FAP (CMR) cruised past Ahly Beni Ghazi (LBA) 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-21) in a decisive encounter determining the second qualifier with Smouha. Nemostars (UGA) surprised Fanar (ALG) 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-6) in one of the day’s thrilling matches.
