Nigerian Sports Award Salutes Nigerian Paralympics Team

The organizers of the Nigeria’s foremost and prestigious sport award, Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) have congratulated the Nigerian contingent to the just concluded Paralympic games held in Rio Brazil for their outstanding performance by wining twelve (12) medals to emerge top African team at the competition.

According to the Chairman, Nigerian Sports Award (NSA) panel, Mr, Ikeddy Isiguzo, ‘the Paralympic team deserves all applauds and accolades for winning eight gold, two silver & two bronze and breaking world records and setting new ones; thereby repeating the same laudable feat it achieved at the London Olympics in 2012.

Isiguzo urged sport loving Nigerians to nominate the Paralympic athletes and their coaches for the different categories in the 2016 edition of the Nigerian Sports Award (NSA). He noted that only nominated athletes, sport administrators, team and coaches have the chance of winning the prestigious award, in recognition of their outstanding performance.

He then called on the sport ministry and the federal government to reward the Paralympics athletes and their coaches for raising the flag of the Nation high at the games, to encourage other Nigerian sports men and women to excel in their respective sports.

The Chairman also used the medium to commend the effort of the Nigerian Football Team (Dream Team V!) captained by Chelsea FC midfielder John Mikel Obi and tutored by coach Samson Siasia for wining a bronze medal (‘Golden Bronze’), which was Nigeria’s only medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Nigerian Paralympics gold medalist includes; Ezuruike Roland (Powerlifting Men’s -54kg), Kehinde Paul (Powerlifting Men’s -65kg), Ejike Lucy (Powerlifting Women -61kg), Onye Lauritta (Athletics Women’s Shot Put –F40), Nwosu Ndidi (Powrerlifting Women’s -73kg), Omolayo Bose (Powerlifting Women’s -79kg), Ugwunwa Flora (Athletics Women’s Javelin Throw –F53/54). Orji Josephine (Powerlifting Women’s +86kg).

Tijani Latifat (Powerlifting Women’s -45kg), Oyema Esther (Powerlifting Women’s -55kg) won Silver Medals and while Innocent Nnamdi (Powerlifting Men’s -72kg), Iyiazi Eucharia (Athletics Women’s Discus Throw –F56/57) won Bronze.

The organisers of the Nigerian Sports Award, Unmissable Incentives Limited, have announced that all is set for the 5th edition of the Award as members of the public can now nominate Nigerian athletes who have exhibited excellent performance in their various sporting fields.

Speaking at a press conference held in Lagos on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Award Panel, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo disclosed that nominations for the various categories of the award has opened from 26th of July, 2016 to the 23rd of September 2016.

Isiguzo assured that being the 5th anniversary of the award, the panel would leave no stone unturned to ensure that this year’s edition would be bigger and better than any of the previous editions. He then called on sports loving Corporate Organisations, Government, well-meaning individuals and Sports philanthropists to support the Nigerian Sports Award by sponsoring the 2016 edition.

While making a presentation of the plans and timelines for this year’s edition of the Award, the Executive Director, Unmissable Incentives Limited, Mr. Kayode Idowu revealed that 19 categories will be awarded this year. He also hinted that the award ceremony will be held in Lagos on the 2nd of December, 2016 at the Banquet Hall, Eko Hotels & Suites.

According to Idowu, the categories includes; Ball Sports Person of the Year (Tennis, Table tennis, Basketball, handball), Coach of the Year, Combat Sports Person of the Year (Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Boxing), Discovery of the Year, Footballer of the Year (Women), Footballer of the Year (Men), Special Sports Person of the Year, Sports Administrator of the Year and Sports Governor of the Year.

Others are; Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sports Journalist of the Year (Radio), Sports Journalist of the Year (TV), Sports Journalist of the Year (Print), Sports Photo Journalist of the Year, School Sport Award, Team of the Year, Track and Field Star of the Year and Weightlifter of the Year.

On the nomination process for the 2016 edition, Idowu highlighted that several social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook alongside the official award website – http://www.nigeriansportsaward.com would still be used to increase participation from the public.

Idowu further stated that the nominations would be possible via Twitter using hashtag for each category. For example, to nominate your Footballer of the Year Women, type #NSA2016(space)#FOTYW(space)name of nominee (space) @ngrsportsaward and tweet. Other hashtags includes: Coach of the Year (#COTY), Sport Governor of the Year (#SGTY), etc.

“We would continue with the trend of allowing nominations via various social media platforms including twitter and Facebook to allow for maximum participation in the nomination process. Participants would not only be able to submit their nominations on our website but also through Twitter and Facebook. Hard copy nomination forms would also be available at the Sport Ministry (State & Federal) and Sports Federations for the interest of people who may prefer hard copy nominations”.

Also speaking at the press conference, the Marketing and Communications Manager of Bet 9ja, one of the sponsors of the awards, Mr. Tunji Mesh, explained that bet 9ja is proud to sponsor the awards, as it recognises and appreciates sports men and women in Nigeria who are doing the country proud in their various fields.

He promised that Bet 9ja would continue to support the Nigerian Sports Award in their drive for sport development in the nation by motivating Nigerian Athletes and rewarding excellent performance.
