2018 African Youth Games: Nigeria Captures Gold And Nations Cup Title In Boys Volleyball Finals

The Nigeria Boys team marked the first volleyball title for their Nation since 2003 as they overcame Egypt 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 14-25, 16-14) to claim the 2018 Boys Youth African Games crown in Alger, Algeria on Tuesday.

After the final, CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani accompanied with the guests of honour led by the Algerian Olympic Committee President Mustapha Beraf honoured the winners with the gold medals and the African Cup as the competition also doubles as the 2018 Boys U19 African Nations Championship.

After thrilling performance that had the fans on their toes for more than 2 hours, Nigeria led in the first set capitalising the Egyptian’s defensive mistakes. Egypt completely dominated the second set to win widely 25-14. Again, Nigeria was superior in the third set to lead 2-1 before Egypt again regained their attacking strategy to draw level at 2-2. The Nigerian players were more stable in the tiebreak to win 16-14 after an epic performance.

Tunisia’s boys took on hosts Algeria 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-14) in the bronze medal match. Tunisia concluded the competition in the third place leaving Algeria in the fourth place.
