Uganda Cranes Win 2016 Africa Rugby Cup 7s

Uganda had beaten Kenya 17 – 12 in the semis while Namibia saw off Madagascar 10 – 7 to set up the final. Kenya Sevens have finished third at the Africa Cup Sevens after an emphatic 46 – 0 battering of Madagascar in the 3rd/4th play offs.

Namibia Sevens and Uganda have also qualified for the World Sevens Series qualifiers to be played during the Hong Kong Sevens in 2017.

By virtue of finishing in position one and two in Africa Cup 7s played in Nairobi, Uganda and Namibia will represent the continent for the sole ticket to participate in the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Uganda Sevens will also take part in the 2016 Dubai Sevens courtesy of winning the Africa Cup Sevens and will go there as an invitational side.

Uganda will play in Pool B where it will take on Cape Town Sevens champions South Africa, Mike Friday’s USA and London Sevens winners Scotland. The Cranes will there after head to South Africa for the Cape Town Sevens.

Tunisia finished fifth with a 17 – 14 win over Zimbabwe who dropped to sixth, Nigeria saw off Morocco 19 – 5 to finish seventh, Senegal beat Botswana to finish ninth while Zambia beat Mauritius 45 – 0 to finish 11th.

Lawrence Sebuliba put Uganda ahead with Phillip Wokorach making the conversion but Namibians replied through Sunday Haitembu’s converted try by Sunday Karuuombe. Ogena Pius restored the lead for Uganda with Wokorach sending in the extras but the Namibians hit back again this time round through Jacobs Jean only for Karuuombe to miss the conversion.

Wokorach would then convert his own try and James Odong’s for a 26-12 lead at the break and Wokorach returned to terrorize the South African’s with his beautiful chip that Odong won to make things 33 – 12. Namibia pulled another back through Karuuombe Nandivatu with Swartz Ricardo adding the extras before Uganda’s Okia Solomon touched down in the last minute to make it 38 – 19.
