GOALLESS DRAW ENSURES RIVERS ANGELS MAINTAIN UNBEATEN STREAK

Rivers Angels and FC Taraba Queens played out a goalless draw in a Week 8 encounter of the Nigeria Women Premier League to ensure the champions went back to Port Harcourt with a point.

The game started in a very scrappy manner as both teams struggled to get the ball on the ground due to a waterlogged pitch caused by an earlier downpour.

Gladys Akpa came close to putting the Angels in front in the 13th minute via a free kick from outside the box but her effort was wasted as she shot over the bar.

The intensity of the game increased as the Port Harcourt side kept on pushing for an opener in the 32nd minute when Chioma Wogu delivered a deep cross inside the box looking to locate Mercy Amanze but Patience Nwankwo was quick to clear the danger.

Amarachi Ojinma had another chance for the visitors in the 34th minute when she found herself inside the box but goalkeeper Dauda Happiness was well positioned to stop her shot.

The host then got their first shot on target in the 38th minute when Zakary Rekiya went pass Uju Joseph but Charity John was able to keep her effort away.

Two minutes later, Iroka Glory blazed a volley wide from a Mercy Amanze pass after a beautiful build-up game.

Waken Katon then had her chance in the 42nd minute but her shot was no worry for goalkeeper Charity.

Just before the half-hour mark, Chioma Wogu thought she had given the visitors a lead but assistant referee raised her flag for an offside.

On resumption of the second half, both teams chose to be more defensive as none did much to hit the target.

With the result, Rivers Angels remained on top of the log with 17 points and will now shift attention to the quarter-final of the Women’s Federation Cup game with Sunshine Queens in Abuja on July 13.
