FORMER EAGLES COACH CELEBRATE 80TH BIRTHDAY WITH PRAYERS FOR NIGERIA FOOTBALL – By Akeem Busari.

Former Super Eagles coach Godwin Etemike celebrated his 80th birthday, saturday with a prayer for the rebirth of Nigeria football.

Etemike, who led the then Green Eagles of Nigeria as coach on a playing tour of Brazil in 1980 in preparation for the 1980 African Cup of Nations in Lagos, expressed his gratitude to God for his health and for keeping him alive to this day.

The former Eagles handler who regretted the untimely deaths of Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu, prayed for God to grant them eternal rest. Even as he was quick to admonish the NFF and other stakeholders in the football community to show more respect and care for their employees, as well as those who had spent the better parts of their lives in the service of their fatherland.

“That l am alive today and healthy is by the grace of God. So many of my former colleagues have gone to the great beyond. And it is also painful that we have lost Keshi and Amodu to the cold hands of death”.

“I would therefore advise the NFF to do much more than paying them a befitting burial, they should also ensure that they their entitlements are paid, in order to ease the pains and traumas of the families they left behind,” the former coach of Bendel lnsurance and defunct NNPC of Warri said.

Speaking with obvious clarity of the mind, Etemike recalled his days as a player of the national team when it was known as the Red Devils, stating that passion and patriotism was the driving force during his playing days.

“We played the game for fun, passion and the love of making Nigeria proud. Players in the game today, are lucky to have so much money thrown at them these days for doing what they enjoy, “he quipped.
