Cowrie Battles Barewa in Nigeria Rugby 2017 Super Cup Clash

Rugby Union fans in Abuja will witness the biggest game of Rugby in the Country between defending champions; Cowrie Rugby Club of Lagos and Northern champions Barewa Rugby Club of Kano at the Old Parade Ground, Garki Area 10 (Opposite International Conference Centre) Abuja at 4pm on Saturday 4th of March.

The NRFF “National Rugby Super Cup” is an annual event organized to determine the National Rugby champion from the Northern and South-West Leagues.

Both teams have never met despite dominating their regional leagues recently. “It is the first time we’ll be playing against Barewa in 15s” says Cowrie captain; Azeez Ladipo. We’ve met only twice at the Independence 7s and edged on both occasions but that’s mere sevens which we are quite good at. Saturday’s match is a huge challenge and I think the boys are really up for this one.

The excitement is not limited to the reputations of the combatants, as both teams will adopt a style of play that appears to be the anti-thesis of each other. Barewa with their hard head driving forward play unleashing their exciting back line, led by “skipper,” Nuhu Ibrahim, will cut through the most stubborn defenses and Cowrie will be resolute and uncompromising with more than their fair share of physical intimidation, not forgetting they have the most fluid and compact backline in the Country at the moment with flying winger Christain Ogar and ThankGod Okafor both back from their base in South Africa where they play with Belhar RFC and Sharks Academy respectively.
