OLYMPIC ROWER WINS PRESTIGIOUS FILIPPI SPIRIT AWARD

Norwegian Olympic rower Nils Jakob Hoff, a medical student at the University of Bergen, has won World Rowing’s 2016 Filippi Spirit Award. This award is for university rowers who demonstrate the core values of rowing. Hoff has won the award ahead of the biggest number of high calibre nominations in the four-year history of the award.

Hoff started rowing as a 14-year-old and 14 years later he became a World Champion in the men’s double sculls. He is famous for striking a Viking pose after crossing the finish line at the 2013 World Rowing Championships. But Hoff’s story goes much deeper than his successful international career.

As a child Hoff was not involved in sport, spending most of his time playing music. Having suffered from bullying in his teenage years for being overweight he took up rowing as he heard it was a good way to lose weight. His affinity with the sport was soon obvious and Hoff made the Norwegian junior national team.

Hoff then began juggling elite rowing with medical studies. He was disappointed to find the University of Bergen in Norway was without a rowing club. Hoff and a fellow student founded the Medical Rowing Club, Bergen with the goal of sharing the values of rowing with their fellow students. The club now has more than 60 active rowers, with more than half of them being women. Hoff has become a role model for kids struggling with weight issues and his teammates say that he is an inspiration for all of those around him.

As he continued through his university studies, Hoff made two Olympic rowing teams – the London 2012 Olympic Games and Rio 2016.

“We had an extremely difficult time this year to pick the Filippi Spirit Award winner,” says FISA President Jean-Christophe Rolland. “The standard and quality of the nominated candidates had the judges strongly debating who would win. Nils just had that something extra. His story on and off the water is exceptional and inspiring.”

The Filippi Spirit Award is open to university rowers worldwide who demonstrate the core values of rowing in his/her social, academic and sporting life and, through those values enable or inspire exceptional success in other people’s lives – for example in education, business, sports or charity. Rowing’s core values are: Teamwork, Fairness, Natural, Inclusive and Enduring.

The winner’s university rowing club will receive a custom-built, top-of-the-range Filippi eight racing shell. The boat recognises the winner’s involvement in the club and helps the club to develop more young rowers in the future.

This is the fourth year of the Award, and the first edition with title sponsor, Filippi. Previous winners include James Cook (GBR) in 2013, Franz Gravenhorst (GER) in 2014, and Kirsten van Fossen (USA) in 2015.

Filippi Lido S.R.L. (also known as Filippi Boats) is a rowing racing boat manufacturer based in Donorotico, Italy. Since 1980 Filippi has produced top Olympic-class rowing boats. They are renowned for design, top-quality materials and state-of-the-art technology combined with passion and core values that underpin their work

The young shooter finished in the spotlights by scoring 252.1 points and by setting the new Wolrd Record as well as the new Junior World Record. With the introduction of the new 2017 ISSF Technical Rules, the 10m Air Rifle finals consist now in 24 shots, and therefore all the records were re-set at the beginning of the season. India’s flag bearer Pooja Ghatkar, 28, won the applauses of the spectators crowding New Delhi’s final hall by claiming bronze with 228.8 points. The Indian student had never won an ISSF medal before, her best placement in career being a 4th place in Baku, last year. “It feels great to win a medal in my home country,” Ghatkar said. “Off-course I aimed for a better medal, but I hope this is just a starting point for better results in the future.”

“I had some difficulties with the blinder during the final, after the 15th shot,” she added. Ghatkar had indeed been leading right to the 14th shot. Then, scoring 9.9 on her 15th shot, she slid down in the placements, finishing behind the two Chinese teammates. “There was some pressure there, but I was able to manage it. I have to thank my coach, Gagan Narang, who helped me a lot, both technically and psychologically, in the lead up to this competition.”

At the following men’s 10m Air Rifle Final, Shi’s teammate Song Buhan, 20, pocketed the brightest medal and set the new World and Junior World Records with 249.5 points. He beat the Hungarian champion Peter Sidi, a 25-time world cup medalist. Ranked 4th in the world in this event, 38-year old Sidi placed in second with 249.1 points, losing the gold medal at the last shot as he fired a 10.2 to Song’s 10.5. Japan’s 18-year old first-time world cup participant Atsushi Shimada followed them in third, claiming Bronze with 227.4 points.

Day-1 of the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi was closed by the success of Australia’s Penny Smith at the women’s Trap Final. The 21-year old shooter beat Italy’s 2012 Olympic Champion Jessica Rossi 40 to 38 hits, winning the new elimination-style Trap final at her first try.

“It’s fantastic. A bit overwhelming but really cool.” Smith said after the match. “It’s been a process. I didn’t train too well leading into the competition, so it’s good to come away with a win. This will be my only world cup event this year. The aim for the season is to make it through the Commonwealth Games selection.”

The ISSF Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun World Cup in New Delhi will continue tomorrow (25 February) with two more medal events. The 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men final will start at 13:00 (UTC+5:30), and it will be followed by the Men’s Trap Final at 15.30.

All finals will be broadcasted live on http://www.issf-sports.org and on the ISSF Facebook Page.

FIG New Executive Committee Meets For The First Time…,

FIG President Morinari Watanabe began to lay out his plans for the development of Gymnastics in announcing the Federation’s new commissions during the first meeting of the new Executive Committee February 21-23 at the FIG Headquarters in Lausanne.

Marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Gymnastics, the EC also agreed to the development of a new FIG discipline.

The other main decision expected from this meeting concerned the nomination of a Technical Coordinator for the FIG. Steve Butcher (USA) will assume this new position, which was adopted in the Statutes by the FIG Congress in October 2016. The role consists of overseeing the technical committees of all disciplines in order to establish greater uniformity of the rules.
“I am delighted with this first meeting, which has been very constructive. We made important decisions concerning the future of Gymnastics, which correspond with my plans to innovate and broaden the base of the sport,” President Watanabe said.

Developing a new discipline
Following a presentation and research into parcours d’obstacles (obstacle course competitions) and parkour, already part of the work of many national gymnastics federations including Sweden, The Netherlands and Belgium, the Executive Committee agreed the development of a related FIG discipline. The Executive Committee has mandated the Presidential Commission to continue the development process.
“The FIG is excited to develop a new discipline based on both historical and contemporary sporting practices, in order to broaden even further the appeal of our sport. The FIG’s work will be based on a clear understanding that parcours d’obstacles, or obstacle course competitions, are necessarily artificial. Meanwhile the FIG deeply respects the development of parkour as a non-competitive training methodology, based on obstacles that were not created as such, and with a particular philosophy emphasising efficiency, usefulness and personal development,” said President Watanabe.

CAF ELECTION: NIGERIA WILL CONSIDER REGIONAL INTEREST – DALUNG

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says it has received with dismay press statements and interviews granted by some officials of the Nigeria Football Federation committing Nigeria to supporting a candidate.

CAF, FOOTBALL, AFRICA

The Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung said that the purported statement is very personal to the NFF President and does not represent the position of the people and the government of Nigeria.

Dalung stated that elections into CAF have a long tradition and Nigeria as a major actor has always taken a position that will not only promote unity and international integration but also take into consideration the interest of Africa and and its sub regional neighbors.

“As it is today, Nigeria has not taken a stand on the candidature of anybody contesting the presidency and should not be misrepresented by anybody. Those aspiring into various offices of CAF are doing so as individuals and are advised not to use the name or image of Nigeria in other to boost their own political fortunes.

“We will support what is good for football but we will exercise our rights through the laid down democratic process as guaranteed by the rules of the game.

“We are appealing to all candidates to go about seeking their support free of rancor and acrimony but should take the interest of the region into consideration. We wish them the best and God bless Nigeria ” Dalung said.
