Cowrie Rugby Club beat rivals Racing RFC 15-5 in the Cup final to record their second Sandie Beach Rugby Tournament success over the weekend at Tarkwa Bay beach as Sandie Beach Rugby returned to Lagos with 8 teams battling for glory.
Cowrie’s playmaker and Captain Azeez Ladipo inspired his team to victory in the cup final with some electrifying display which saw star wing man; Christian Ogar score three tries in the second half. The first half was tense with both teams battling to retain possession and create the overlap.
Center referee Ifeanyin Arinze had the game under control as the first half ended 0-0. Both teams made substitutions at half time. Racing brought in Captain David Oyekanmi whilst Cowrie brought in John Oladele to replace Alfred Sunday. Cowrie stepped up the tempo with swift passing of the ball which paid off when Tunji Oduntan sent a long pass to Azeez who picked the pass and beat his marker to create an overlap before releasing Christian to cross over the line for the first time in the final. Christian crossed over the line twice after that before Racings’ playmaker; Steven James sold a dummy to score a consolation try for the defending champions with less than one minute remaining.
Racing had previously displaced Team Tarkwa Bay. A local team; in the semi final after coming out as group A leaders which consists; Lagos Rugby Club, Team Light House (Another local team) and Eco II. Cowrie beat Lagos Rugby Club 20-0 in the semi final after coming out tops in group B ahead of Tarkwa Bay, Panthers and Monlex team.
The 14th Baale of Tarkwa Bay watched the entire tournament with amusement and later presented the trophy and medals to the new champions, Cowrie. “I want to thank Turbo Crest for bringing this year’s event to Tarkwa Bay. We are happy to host anytime because this tournament is the first of its kind in Tarkway Bay . Our local teams will keep playing and training to win it next year”.

NRFF Vice President/Technical Director; Fasimoye Olatunji was also in attendance.. And He said: “I am glad to see the local teams on display. They were very happy to enter their own local team and I am most happy to see Rugby being played here on the island. Hopefully they will keep this going and raise a full 15-a-side team to compete in the South West League soon”.
