Sandie Beach Rugby returns to Lagos with a bang this weekend at Tarkwa Bay…
Now in its fourth year the festive season rugby fiesta brings a love of running rugby with the oval ball to the ever-popular beach. Saturday and Sunday will see two days of fun in the sun with juniors playing on Saturday and seniors playing on Sunday.
Ayo Johnson, CEO of TurboCrest Sports, the event organisers is excited about moving the tournament to Tarkwa Bay. “Sandie Beach Rugby has always been about spreading the love of rugby and the move to Tarkwa Bay is an opportunity for rugby to showcase the rich cultural heritage and history of one of the most beautiful beaches in Lagos and in a unique sports tourism venture.”
Teams of 10, with 5 players on the pitch at any one time, will play Touch Rugby a non contact form of the game where a two-handed “touch” on the body of a player replaces a normal rugby tackle. After 5 “touches” the possession changes hands unless a try has been scored. This form of rugby is a safe and easy for beginners to get involved in a game. Touch rugby is growing rapidly and is played on beaches all around the world.
Sandie Beach Rugby has big plans to take the game beyond Nigeria’s shores with longer term aims to hold future tournaments in Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and other West African countries. Teams from around the country are expected to travel to Lagos this weekend for the only beach rugby tournament in Nigeria.
Turbo sports has been working closely with the Tarkwa Bay community to make this weekend a resounding success and a team of Tarkwa bay residents have been in training over the last few weeks to enter a team.
Getting people to Tarkwa has always been a challenge and TurboSports working with NIWA has arranged that ferries will carry players and spectators to the beach from the NIWA jetty at CMS Bus stop in Marina for a cost of N300.
