Nigeria and Commonwealth female wrestling champion, Odunayo Adekuoroye, has won gold in the on going Baku Golden Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In the earlier rounds of the championship, the immensely gifted Nigerian wrestler beat Tatyana Kit of Ukraine 10-0 and also defeated Abdildina Aiym of Kazakhstan 5-2, to qualify for the finals. And in the final match, Adekuoroye defeated Russian Menkenova 12-2 to win gold.
Meanwhile, compatriot Amina Adeniyi, was not lucky in her bouts as she lost in the first fight to Tkach Ostapc of Ukraine 0-4. In the second match, she was beaten by Sastin Mariama of Hungary 3-6. Thus failing to advance beyond the early rounds.
The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, expressed his happiness on the gold winning performances of Adekuoroye. He also regretted the inability of Aminat Adeniyi to go far in the championship.
Meanwhile prior to the championship, Igali had complained about the preparations of the Nigerian wrestlers, which he blamed on the paucity of funds.
