Ahead of ITTF World Junior Championship: Peters Seeks Support For Team Nigeria

One of Nigeria’s highest ranked umpires, John Peters has appealed to states and corporate bodies in the country to support Team Nigeria in its quest to be part of this year’s ITTF World Junior Championship holding later this month in Cape Town, South Africa.

Peters, who officiated at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil believes the efforts of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) led by Wahid Oshodi to expose the players to world class tournament should be complemented for the team to make it to the championship.

“The eight players are made up of four boys and four girls. Two of the boys and one girl are from Lagos State, while two of the girls are from Ekiti State. Kwara and Ondo States have a boy each, with the other girl coming from G20 Club in Abuja. It should be an honour for the States and club that the players selected on merit out of the millions of players in the country, are from them. I think NTTF need the support now in order to fulfil their vision towards ensuring that there will be replacements for the Segun Toriolas, the Aruna Quadris and the Olufunke Oshonnaikes when they leave the stage. I believe that this vision needs to be supported by all for it to be realized,” Peters said.

With the federation shopping for N16m to make the trip, Peters said: “If they fail to go, apart from the psychological effect it will have on the players, Nigeria faces possible sanctions, which may damage the very fantastic image it has at present.

I am calling on all lovers of table tennis to come and help make the dream of these boys and girls come true.”
